Google Business Profile: How to Get Your Business Location Live

A step-by-step guide to registering your business with Google, including the naming mistake that gets the most submissions rejected.

For many local businesses, Google Business Profile brings in more enquiries than their website does. This profile is what fills the map box at the top of search results — the thing people look at before they scroll to any website listing.

Registering is free and you can do it yourself. Here is the order of operations.

Step 1 — Gather your details first

Before opening any form, collect:

  • Your business name exactly as it appears on your signage or official documents
  • The full address and nearest landmark
  • A phone number that is genuinely active and answered
  • Opening hours for each day, including public holidays
  • At least five photos: logo, storefront, interior, products, and team

Preparing this up front makes the rest of the process far quicker.

Step 2 — Register with a business Google account

Go to google.com/business and sign in with your business's own Google account — not a staff member's personal one. This matters: if that person leaves, access to the profile leaves with them.

Fill in the name, category, and address. For businesses that travel to customers and have no storefront, choose the service area option so the address is not shown publicly.

Step 3 — Choose the category carefully

The primary category is one of the strongest factors in when your profile gets shown. Pick the most specific description of your business, not the broadest.

For example: "Bakery" is better than "Restaurant" if bread is what you sell. Secondary categories can be added afterwards, up to nine.

Step 4 — Get through verification

Google needs to confirm the business genuinely exists. The method varies: a postcard to your address, a video recording, a phone call, or email. Google decides which, not you.

It typically takes 3–14 days. During that window, do not change the name or address — a mid-process change often forces verification to restart from scratch.

The mistakes that cause the most rejections

Stuffing keywords into the business name. Writing "Best Cheap Motorcycle Repair South Jakarta" when the actual name is "Jaya Workshop" breaks Google's rules and will almost certainly be rejected. Even if it slips through, the profile can be suspended later.

Inconsistent address formatting. The address on the profile must match exactly what appears on your website and other directories. "St." in one place and "Street" in another is enough to weaken Google's confidence in your data.

A phone number nobody answers. For some verification methods, Google genuinely calls. An unanswered number stops the process there.

Once the profile is live

A profile left dormant loses to an active competitor. The three habits that matter most:

  • Reply to every review, including the complaints
  • Update opening hours ahead of public holidays
  • Add new photos regularly

All three are free and need no technical skill whatsoever.
